Sun Microsystems and Fujitsu has released a server for midrange systems called the SPARC Enterprise T5440.

SPARC is a chip multi-threaded (CMT) server which packs up to four processors into a four rack unit (RU).

According to Sam Srinivasan, director, Partner Sales, Sun Microsystems, the T5440 server can consolidate hundreds of workloads onto a single system, it is energy efficient and uses less power than conventional products.

“The T5440 is built for data centres that want to consolidate similar servers running a multitude of applications in a single environment,” said Srinivasan.

“Its core functionality is that it is a server built for virtualisation and accepts a multitude of server products that fit into various consumer environments depending on the application.

“The opportunities for the reseller are simple. They have to offer customers a solution to a multitude of complex businesses environments and we can offer them a one stop shop to add value to what they bring,” he added.

Srinivasan claims consumers are increasingly looking to see how they can adopt greener issues into their environment.

“Going forward, the channel needs to be more energy efficient,” he said.

“A server is designed for workloads that have a lot of processing capabilities.

"We need to offer the reseller a high performance server that they can take to the consumer and make it useful to their environment,” he added.

The SPARC Enterprise T5440 server is available directly from Sun and Fujitsu and their resellers from $63,545

Sun has also introduced an online assessment tool for customers to see if their current server meets their needs and compare its offerings on data centre performance, cost, power, space and management.
