Dell will continue to put its configuration kiosks into mass-merchant chain shops around the country but resellers with smaller footprints may have to wait for a "niche" opportunity, said a general manager with the direct PC specialist.
Home business manager Evan Williams said the kiosks where in-store shoppers customise their new Dells on the PC maker's website had proven popular at Officeworks and Good Guys. Dell also sells through Dick Smith in Australia and New Zealand.
Williams said a Port Macquarie shop yesterday had a $5000 order for a custom PC to be fulfilled in a few days.
Speaking at the Sydney launch of Dell's Alienware brand of gaming notebook PCs, desktops and peripherals, Williams said there may be opportunities for some specialist resellers to gain access to premium Dell lines such as the Adamo but there were no immediate plans.
In the case of the Good Guys, he said kiosks were positioned at the ends of aisles for maximum visbility and traffic.
Dell was also expanding its Dell Champions flying squad of technical and training specialists to improve technical knowledge of its products, Williams said.
