AMD, IBM expand chip technology research pact

Advanced Micro Devices has expanded its semiconductor technology alliance with IBM.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices said on Tuesday it had expanded its semiconductor technology alliance with IBM.

The expanded alliance would include early exploratory research of new transistor, interconnect, lithography and die-to-package technologies through 2011, it said in a statement.

The agreement lets AMD work with IBM's research division on research and development, electronic materials and feasibility studies three to five years before commercialisation.

AMD said the agreement means both companies identify and study future technology challenges earlier.
