In pictures: Apple's iPhone 5
Sixth-gen smartphone makes its debut.
Sep 13, 2012
The long-awaited iPhone 5 launched today, with Apple claiming to have "set a new bar" on previous models. The smartphone has a list of new specs and comes in both white and black, in a two-tone design.
The black iPhone 5 will ship in black and slate. The smartphone will retail in Australia from Apple for $799 for the 16GB model, $899 for 32GB and $999 for the 64GB model. It is available for pre-order on September 14 from Apple and will start shipping to Australia on the 21st. The new iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 6, will arrive on September 19.
The white iPhone 5 comes in white and silver aluminium.
The iPhone 5 is Apple’s thinnest smartphone yet, with its width trimmed down by 18 percent to 7.6mm, 20 percent lighter than its predecessor at 112 grams, and larger with a 4in screen over the iPhone 4s’ 3.5in display. The larger screen size enabled Apple to add a fifth row of icons to the 1136 x 640, 16:9 aspect ratio "retina" display.
Long-running rumours about a possible new dock connector were confirmed as Apple announced its 80 percent smaller 8-pin “Lightning” connector, ditching the previous 30-pin port. The company said it was working on an adaptor to convert the existing 30-pin capable accessories.
The iPhone 5 will come packed with new headphones, dubbed "EarPods" by Apple.
The most significant news for Australians is the smartphone will touch down with local 4G compatibility, offered by Telstra, Optus and Virgin Mobile. This marks the first time an Apple LTE product has been made available on local 4G networks.
