No free tech support for myKP unlimited broadband plan

Users of myKP’s soon-to-be-launched unlimited download xDSL service will have to pay extra for technical support, web space, multiple IP addresses and email addresses.

The exclusions are part of the ‘fat’ in regular broadband offerings that myKP will trim to make its new offering possible, according to the company’s director of ‘stuff’, George Kaloudis.

The ISP, which is best known for building free WiFi networks in cooperation with regional and rural local councils, said Tuesday that it will start limited trials of a new $79.95 broadband offering with unlimited downloads within weeks.

The offering will be trialled in regional areas first, according to Kaloudis. myKP has presences in small towns such as Gilgandra and Wilcannia, according to its website.

“It won’t be the type of product that most people are accustomed to,” Kaloudis told iTnews.

“All the product is offering is plain vanilla Internet access. If users want web space, multiple IP addresses and email addresses it will add additional fees.

“Likewise technical support will be charged – we won’t be offering free telephone support because the product is geared towards people that don’t require a lot of support,” he said.

myKP will also reduce costs by cutting back advertising of the service and purchasing wholesale capacity from carriers here and overseas, according to the ISP.

Kaloudis said myKP ‘will use someone else’s DSLAMs’ to start with and said myKP ‘had no plans’ to deploy its own equipment in exchanges.

Kaloudis said the response to the product offering was already better than anticipated, with approximately 1,500 registrations of interest received in the last 72 hours.

“We haven’t analysed where the registrations are coming from, but we’ll do that over the next few days,” he said.

Full details of the service offering and plans are expected to be released on Australia Day.
