Research In Motion (RIM) and PalmSource have announced mixed financial results for the US quarter ending 29 November.

 

RIM, which markets the BlackBerry wireless email PDA, reported a US$16.3 million profit for its fiscal third quarter.

 

In the year-earlier period, the company lost US$92.8 million.

 

The Canadian firm reported that its BlackBerry base grew by 154,000, to 865,000 subscribers from the second quarter.

 

RIM predicted its fourth-quarter revenues would be between US$220 million to US$240 million.

 

PalmSource, formerly the software unit of Palm, lost US$9.1 million in its second quarter.

The unit lost US$8.3 million in the year-earlier quarter.

 

Noting that its business was recovering, PalmSource said in the next quarter it expected to break even or log a net loss of US$2 million.
