Vodafone employee charged with $200k iPhone fraud

Vodafone Hutchison Australia has confirmed an employee was investigated over a $200,000 fraud involving hundreds of iPhone, Nokia and BlackBerry handsets.

A spokesman for the mobile telco told iTnews that it was "assisting [NSW Police] with their investigation".

He said the employee was "under investigation by police for alleged fraud involving the false procurement of mobile phones".

NSW Police said a 25-year old woman was charged with obtaining benefit by deception.

"The woman was questioned in relation to allegedly fraudulently obtaining 182 mobile phones on 27 January," police said.

"The items allegedly included 13 Blackberry 9500 phones, 11 Blackberry 9700 phones, 31 Nokia N97 phones and 131 Apple iPhones."

She was also questioned over an alleged subsequent attempt to fraudulently obtain 1000 Apple iPhones from VHA; each was $1086.

The woman was granted conditional bail to appear at Blacktown Local Court on 25 February.
