An investigation into telemarketing activities of the Liberal Party of Australia during the 2004 federal election has found no evidence of data misuse, according to the Australian Communications Authority.

An investigation into telemarketing activities of the Liberal Party of Australia during the 2004 federal election has found no evidence of data misuse, according to the Australian Communications Authority (ACA).

The investigation focused on whether data from the Integrated Public Number Database (IPND) had been improperly used by the Liberals, after a complaint from the Australian Labor Party.

The IPND is a Telstra managed database of information about telecommunications customers in Australia and includes silent or unlisted numbers.

“Our investigation found that the phone numbers were obtained from publicly available databases,” said ACA acting chairman Dr Bob Horton.

Such databases can include numbers that were previously listed, but have since become unlisted, Horton said.

The ACA has asked the Office of the Federal Privacy Commissioner to review the complaint as there may be other issues within its jurisdiction.
