A fault in Cisco switching equipment on Dodo's core network overnight has been blamed for intermittent and downed connections for thousands of users overnight.
Dodo internet users in NSW, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory reported data browsing and authentication issues about 8pm last night. The problems extended past midnight.
Approximately 10,000 ClubTelco customers not yet migrated to Eftel's DSLAM network were also impacted.
Dodo apologised for the outages on its Twitter account but neither communications staff nor CEO Larry Kestelman could be contacted for comment today.
Eftel CEO Scott Stavretis said the issues arose from a failure in a Cisco switching router used on Dodo's core network for the three states.
The network failed to switch-over to a back-up router, prompting Cisco engineers to fix the problem on-site.
"It locked up and didn't switch over as it should," Stavretis said.
ClubTelco migration continues
Over the past three months, Eftel has migrated the majority of ClubTelco users in last June's reverse takeover, onto its BroadbandNext DSLAM network and away from Dodo's core network.
The merged entity has approximately 120,000 active DSL services nationally, in addition to wholesale infrastructure picked up with the acquisition of Platform Networks in August.
Stavretis said the company expected to wrap up migration "over the next month or two" but would not install new DSLAMs to cope with the increased users.
"A lot of the competitive exchanges have very long wait times to get into them," he said.
"With the NBN coming, the timing doesn't match up."
