Nokia’s recently-deceased Linux-based mobile operating system MeeGo is set for a revival after a band of ex-Nokia staff formed a start-up focused on delivering new MeeGo devices.
"Jolla" consists of directors and core executives from Nokia’s MeeGo N9 business. It has no association with Nokia, meaning no support or updates for Nokia’s N9 smartphone.
The group is led by former MeeGo executives Marc Dillon and Jussi Hurmola, and is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland. The company is financed by a group of unnamed internal and domestic private investors.
Jolla plans to release a new smartphone running MeeGo by the end of this year. It is yet to reveal hardware partners or product details.
"The OS has evolved from MeeGo OS using Mer Core and Qt with Jolla technology including its own brand new UI,” the company said in a statement.
"Nokia created something wonderful – the world’s best smartphone product. It deserves to be continued, and we will do that together with all the bright and gifted people contributing to the MeeGo success story."
Jolla also hinted at tablet plans on its Twitter page, but confirmed a smartphone was its first priority.
