Microsoft has made its evaluation version of Windows 8 Enterprise available for a free 90-day trial.

The trial software was released at the same time as Microsoft gave members of the Microsoft Developers Network (MSDN) and the TechNet subscriber community access to the Release To Manufacturers version, first announced in early August.

Both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 8 Enterprise are available to download.

The trial version is the last iteration of the software before its launch on October 26.

Consumers will be able to get the final version on that date by purchasing a new PC or by upgrading. Microsoft announced in May that consumers who buy a new Windows 7 PC between June 2, 2012, and Jan. 31, 2013, can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $US14.99.

In July the company said Windows XP, Vista and 7 users can upgrade to Windows Pro for $US39.99 through Jan. 31, 2013.
