An invitation to media for a September 6 event has sparked speculation Amazon is readying a new tablet device.
Amazon last week issued invitations to US media for an event in Los Angeles on September 6. The invite was sparse on details but the event is being organised by Amazon's Kindle unit, which looks after its Kindle Fire tablet.
It first launched the 7in Kindle Fire in September 2011. A 2012 launch would mean a new device exactly one year after it first debuted.
The second-generation Kindle Fire tablet is expected to launch with a larger 8.9in screen over its 7in predecessor.
Amazon has also been previously reported to be looking into the smartphone market, preparing to release an Android-based smartphone in an attempt to rattle market leader Apple.
It is reportedly working with Apple partner and Chinese technology giant Foxconn on the device.
September is a busy month for gadget makers, with Apple, Motorola, Nokia and Microsoft all expected to release new products during the month.
