Wholesale VoIP service provider iVox has deployed VegaStream IP-to-TDM gateways to interconnect its VoIP service to the public network, replacing equipment from US manufacturer Quintum.

The vendor deployed multiple Vega 400 gateways – which support up to 120 simultaneous calls - at its Sydney network operations centre. The gateways connect analogue and digital PBX’s to IP networks.

Michael Clarke, chief operations officer at iVox, claimed the Quintum gateways were too basic and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) functionality was under-developed.

Romain Bonjean, CEO at iVox said the service provider chose the VegaStream product because it provided the ISDN signalling and number translation support that allowed it to offer a national footprint for a comprehensive call collection and termination service.

“We have not experienced a single gateway failure since we launched the service a year ago and call quality remains consistently high even through we have operated at peak capacity,” he said.

Bonjean said with the previous gateways, the transition from TDM was hard to handle and the company wanted a network purely based on SIP.

The iVox deal was a “significant” win for VegaStream, said Chris Papaioanou, regional sales and marketing director at the company which launched in Australia and New Zealand during March last year.

iVox is one of VegaStream’s first Australian customers.

Papaioanou said the company was targeting Siemens and Alcatel VARs to sell its wares and had started talking to NEC, which owns 40 percent of the PBX customer base in Australia.
