Huawei Ascend P1 lands in Oz after delay

Huawei this week launched its dual-core, high-end Ascend P1 handset in Australia, despite originally slating the phone’s release for May.

The smartphone represents the first high-end Huawei handset release locally. The company is traditionally known for its budget smartphones, most recently unveiling the $279 Vision for Australian customers.

It is available this week from Dick Smith for $499.

The P1 boasts a 1.5GHz dual-core Cortex A9 processor, 1GB RAM and 4.3in Super AMOLED 960x540px 256ppi screen, running the Android 'Ice Cream Sandwich' operating system.

It packs an 8MP camera with 1080p video on the rear, and a 1.3MP, 720p front camera into a 7.69mm thick body, including the 1670mAh battery.

A Huawei spokesperson said finalising agreements with partners had contributed to the delay.
