With Quorum Systems managing director Mark McLean
What networking brands and services do you specialise in?
Primarily Cisco and HP for routing and switching, and Fortinet for wi-fi and security.
When did your company first get involved in this area?
Way back in 2004, when the company started. It’s one of those things that was mandatory for an IT systems integrator of the time, and continues to be to this day – perhaps even more so now.
What are your networking credentials?
Various Cisco and Fortinet technical certifications.
Which distributor do you use for networking?
Dicker Data and Wavelink.
Have you heard about any cool developments in the networking space recently?
I think as SDN branches out from the data centre into corporate and campus networks, we are going to see some very interesting applications of the technology.
Can you tell us about a recent deployment you have done?
A global travel organisation engaged us to design and implement WAN/LAN and wi-fi solutions for one of their properties. This consisted of a Fortinet UTM solution at the core of the network, Cisco Catalyst switches for the access layer, and a Cisco wi-fi solution consisting of approximately 300 access points for staff and guest networks.
What is driving customers’ networking projects?
Cloud technology is moving a whole lot further into the mainstream than it was even a few years ago. We are seeing a trend in organisations reducing their reliance on traditional MPLS/private networks in preference of high-speed, redundant internet links as they transition workloads into public clouds.
Core to everything that we do. We are a cloud-first organisation, so the network layer is more important now than it has ever been.
