iiNet has confirmed it is closing its Melbourne office, with Friday set to be its last day in operation and an unconfirmed number of staff expected to be affected.
The ISP told CRN that employees at the Melbourne office were notified of the closure on Tuesday, with final arrangements for staff, including redundancies and potential redeployments, still to be completed. CRN understands the number of affected staff is less than 60.
iiNet general manager of customer service Mat Conn told CRN the Melbourne closure was the result of ongoing redeployments within iiNet's parent TPG group and staff departures over time.
He said it was similar reasoning that saw iiNet’s customer contact centre in Sydney close last year.
“It’s been similar to the Sydney situation, with Melbourne we’ve gone through a process where we’ve tried to redeploy staff throughout the wider TPG group, at times successfully and at times unsuccessfully,” he said.
“The reality of the situation is that we’ve had to streamline our operations and find efficiencies in light of market pressures, including those driven by the NBN.
“With that said we still have big centres in Perth, Adelaide, Auckland and in Cape Town, where we have no intention in the immediate or foreseeable future to close. In those sites we are actually investing.”
In December, iiNet closed its Sydney contact centre office, giving about 30 employees the choice between voluntary redundancy or redeployment within the TPG Group.
"The situation got to a point where the size of the Sydney operating contact centre was significantly small; further roles were made available within the TPG group and we offered a significant number of redeployed roles for those interested in them,” Conn said late last year.
