Telstra launches Gateway Frontier to get users back online during an outage

Telstra has launched a new wireless router for getting customers back online during a fixed-line disruption.

The Telstra Gateway Frontier allows users to connect to the telco's 4G network if their fixed services go down. Services will automatically switch over to 4G, but use broadband quota while waiting for their connection to come back.

It's also aimed at customers who expect service disruption while moving homes or switching to a new broadband service, such as the NBN.

The router features 802.11ac wi-fi, which Telstra said would increase in-home wi-fi speeds by up to four times, though download speeds are limited up to 6Mbps to avoid congestion.

Telstra executive director of home and business products Stuart Bird noted that it was even more important to customers using smart home devices to maintain an online connection.

“By bringing together the best of our mobile and home networks, families can be confident we will keep them connected so they can continue to access entertainment, work from home and keep in touch online," he said.

“And as our customers adopt more smart home technologies, staying online becomes even more integral as households connect to services such as remote monitoring, in-home voice assistants and home automation.”

The Telstra Gateway Frontier costs $216 outright or $9 per month on a 24-month plan for existing Telstra customers.

The new device forms part of Telstra's investment in new products across fixed and mobile services to improve on network connectivity for customers.

Last year, the telco announced it would spend $3 billion on upgrading its network and improving services, which includes $500 million to improve customer experience.
