Telstra wins $90 million deal to upgrade network across 850 McDonald's restaurants

Telstra has landed a $90 million deal to roll out Telstra Air to 850 McDonald's restaurants and 35 Ronald McDonald House locations across the country.

The carrier will upgrade fibre connections to the restaurants to provide connectivity that will "enhance key restaurant operations and enable licencees to run their back office more effectively".

Telstra will also replace the traditional PSTN system at McDonald's with a new TIPT unified communications solution.

Customers will have in-store access to Telstra Air, the carrier's free wi-fi network that allows customers with an existing Telstra service to connect to more than one million hotspots around the country.

The rollout is expected to take 24 months, with a significant number of restaurants to be connected in the next 12 months.

McDonald's Australia CIO Scott Green said this was one of the most transformative technology projects the company has undertaken. “Our new network will provide more speed and reliability, creating better connectivity experiences for our customers and enhance key restaurant operations for our back office."

Telstra chief customer officer Martijn Blanken said: “McDonald’s is a global leader in transformative customer experiences so we are delighted that Telstra technology will connect and enable these experiences here in Australia.

“At Telstra we are shifting to a world where we collaborate with our customers to explore how our network and our technologies can digitise and innovate, enabling conversations about what we can help make possible for our customers’ business, their operations and their customers today and in the future.”
